Bloomin Onion Bites with Comeback Sauce

Ahhh…Bloomin’ Onions. (Or in this case, bloomin’ onion bites)… when my craving sets in for these warm & crispy snacks, it’s hard to get rid of it until I have some (along with a killer dipping sauce- that is a must. You can’t have one without the other). Well it’s not always super convenient to hop in the car and jet over to your nearest restaurant to get these. We used to have an Outback near us, but, no more: ( So sad. Sure, there are other places to get onion rings and whatnot but I likes me Bloomin’ Onions! Well believe me when I say, you can make these at home and you wouldn’t know the difference. (REALLY.)

If you don’t have a deep fryer, I highly recommend one to indulge now an then. They’re affordable, and make it so easy to whip up your favorite fried foods, (ahem, such as these). Much easier than on a stove-top- although that is doable too.

This batter is SO good, I’ve got to try it with chicken sometime. Definitely a keeper and perfect with these savory Blomin’ Onion bites.

  • One medium onion
  • 1 cup vegetable oil (approximation, depending on if you’re using a deep fryer or frying on the stovetop, see below)
  • Batter
  • 5 Tablespoons Cornstarch
  • ½ cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 pinch salt/pepper
  • 8 oz. beer
  • Seasoned Flour
  • ½ cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 pinch cayenne powder
  • 1 pinch pepper
  • Comeback Sauce
  • ⅓ cup mayonnaise
  • ⅛ cup ketchup
  • ⅛ chili sauce
  • ⅓ teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ⅛ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ⅝ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ⅛ teaspoon Tabasco sauce
  • ⅛ cup olive oil
  • ⅓ to taste juice of one lemon

  1. Onion Slices
  2. Slice the onion into bite sized pieces of desired size.
  3. Mix the batter ingredients until well combined in one bowl, and mix the seasoned flour ingredients in another.
  4. Preheat the vegetable oil, it needs to be at 350 degrees for frying. You need enough oil to cover about half of the onion slices. I used a deep fryer and they came out perfectly 🙂
  5. Dip the onion slices in the seasoned flour, then in the batter. Carefully drop the onions into the vegetable oil (without creating a splash, it’s best to place on a wooden or deep fry spoon and carefully lower into the oil)
  6. Cook on each side until golden brown and remove from the oil. Let the excess oil drain on a paper towel.
  7. Comeback Sauce
  8. Mix all ingredients together, it’s best to let it then refrigerate for at least an hour, but overnight is ideal. Serve with warm onion slices and enjoy!
